Loss of Employment

John, 49, had been an assistant manager for 17 years. He lost his job when his company restructured. Having received his severance pay and confident about his ability to find a new job, he did not start looking for work right away. However, once he did, he realized that getting a new job would not be as easy as he thought. All the steps involved—preparing a résumé, doing well in interviews, etc.—require that you know who you are and what you can offer an employer. After several months of fruitless effort, John decided to meet with one of our career counsellors, who taught him job-searching tools that highlighted his skills. Together, they drew up a list of potential employers. In just two months, John got the job he wanted as a project manager.
